Former Prime Minister and theologian Abraham Kuyper embarked on a historic journey through the Middle East in 1905. By boat and train for long stretches, and by covered wagon and horse to remote places. He 'discovered' Islam, observed new cultures, and described simmering tensions. He visited Ukraine, Syria, Sudan, Egypt, Morocco, and Turkey, among others, and marveled at the Holy Land. He meticulously documented his journey in his book *Around the Old Sea*. But what remains of that? What has changed, or conversely, remained the same? And what developments did he foresee? Kuyper's journey proves to be remarkable in many respects and connects almost seamlessly with our time. With the new documentary series of the same name, IKON follows in Abraham Kuyper's footsteps. The series shows how incredibly tense and complex the cultures and religions of the Middle East relate to one another, just as Kuyper saw it in 1905.
